Good morning 跑了松鼠好嘛, I'm Tom Banks, and this is Goose Pod for you. Today is Monday, September 08th.
Mask
And I'm Mask. We're here to discuss Real Madrid setting their sights on a 19-year-old talent who could be available for a cool €20 million.
Tom Banks
Let's get started. The name on everyone's lips is Kees Smit, a 19-year-old midfielder from AZ Alkmaar. Real Madrid sees massive potential in him, so much so that their top scout, Juni Calafat, is personally monitoring his progress in the Netherlands. It feels like a classic Madrid move.
Mask
Classic? It's predatory, and I mean that as a compliment. You don't build an empire by waiting. You identify the asset, you monitor it, and you strike. Smit is versatile, likened to Bellingham, and was a champion with the Netherlands U19 team. This isn't a gamble; it's a calculated investment.
Tom Banks
An investment with a long-term contract, though. He's tied to AZ Alkmaar until 2028. That gives the Dutch club a lot of leverage. They know Madrid is interested, and they won't let a prized possession go easily, no matter how much a player might want the move.
Mask
Leverage is just a negotiation tactic. Every contract has a price. AZ Alkmaar knows they're a stepping stone, a talent farm. They'll demand more than his market value, sure, but for a club like Madrid, paying a premium for a potential decade-long superstar is just smart business.
Tom Banks
And Real Madrid has a history of nurturing these talents. Their youth academy, "La Fábrica," is legendary. It’s more than just a training ground; it's a place where the club's very identity is forged. They’ve produced some incredible players over the decades, a real testament to their philosophy.
Mask
Philosophy is a nice word for it. I call it a production line. A highly efficient one. You have the different Juvenil teams—A, B, and C—all competing at the highest levels, winning titles like the UEFA Youth League. It's a system designed to create winners and, ultimately, high-value assets.
Tom Banks
It's a system that creates a competitive environment, that's for sure. The Juvenil A team's main rivals are Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. These young players are exposed to high-pressure derby matches from a very early age, which prepares them for the intensity of the senior team.
Mask
Exactly. It weeds out the weak. You either thrive in that pressure cooker or you don't make the cut. By the time a player is ready for the first team, they're not just skilled; they're battle-hardened. That’s the kind of player you need to dominate Europe, not just compete.
Tom Banks
And it's not just about producing their own. They identify external talents like Smit who they believe can integrate into that winning culture. It’s a dual strategy of homegrown talent and strategic acquisitions, a model that has brought them immense success over the years, maintaining their top-tier status.
Tom Banks
But Real Madrid isn't the only one with this strategy. They are far from alone in their admiration for Kees Smit. We're hearing that giants like Manchester City, Chelsea, and even Bayern Munich are all keeping a very close watch on him. That's some heavy competition.
Mask
Competition is inevitable when you're targeting the best. It's a bidding war, a battle of resources and persuasion. This is where the project sells itself. Do you want to be part of a well-oiled machine or a historic dynasty? Madrid's legacy is a powerful negotiating tool. It’s not just about money.
Tom Banks
That's a lot of pressure for a 19-year-old, though. Having all these top clubs vying for your signature must be overwhelming. The agent's demands could complicate things, and AZ Alkmaar is in a position to just sit back and watch the offers roll in, driving the price higher and higher.
Mask
Let them. A higher price just confirms his value. If you back down from a fight, you signal weakness. Madrid needs to be decisive. They have the resources, they have the prestige. The only obstacle is their own hesitation. Pay the fee, get the player, and move on to the next target. It's that simple.
Tom Banks
It's a huge financial outlay for a teenager, though. It feels like the youth market is getting more expensive every year. A €20 million price tag for a 19-year-old, who is still relatively unproven at the highest level, really says a lot about the current state of football valuations.
Mask
It's not an outlay; it's an investment in the future. Look at their recent moves—renewing contracts for core players like Courtois and Brahim Diaz. They're locking down their present while simultaneously securing their future. You can't put a price on continued dominance. This is how you stay ahead of the curve.
Tom Banks
So, for you, it's about building a sustainable core for the long term? It’s not just a splashy signing, but a strategic piece to ensure the club remains at the pinnacle of European football for the next decade. That’s a perspective I can certainly appreciate. It’s about legacy.
Tom Banks
Looking ahead, it seems this could escalate into a transfer battle with their biggest rivals. Reports are suggesting that Barcelona is also set to enter the race for Smit. A Clasico in the transfer market could be fascinating to watch, adding another layer of drama to the whole affair.
Mask
Excellent. A battle with Barcelona only raises the stakes and makes the victory sweeter. Securing a talent like Smit isn't just about strengthening your own midfield; it's about preventing your primary rival from doing the same. It's a zero-sum game, and you have to play to win.
Tom Banks
That's the end of today's discussion. Thank you for listening to Goose Pod. See you tomorrow.

Photo by Daniel Jayo/Getty Images Share Tweet With Dani Ceballos seemingly set to leave Real Madrid in the closing days of the summer transfer window, Real Madrid had already identified a young profile to take his place in the squad once his departure was confirmed. Eventually, however, the Spaniard’s move away from the club collapsed and he ended up staying under Xabi Alonso’s command and will continue to do so until next summer in all likelihood.

Los Blancos, however, refuse to lose sight of the young talent who had caught their attention and it is none other than AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit. Still on the radar As relayed in a recent report by Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid continue to see Smit as a serious option to improve the squad next summer, and continue to keep tabs on him despite not signing him this summer.

Juni Calafat is personally following the situation of the 19-year-old Dutch star and Real Madrid could well push to sign him next summer. In fact, the player is also aware of the club’s interest in him. Smit’s current contract with AZ Alkmaar runs until the summer of 2028 but Los Blancos are not the only team eyeing his signing as it stands.

Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all rate him highly and will fight for his transfer. Smit, as one of the Netherlands’ best-rated midfield talents, will be available for a sum of close to €20 million which is what his club value him at. The question, however, is whether Real Madrid will be willing to shell out that sum for the youngster.

Last season, the Dutch player made 18 appearances and nine starts for AZ Alkmaar in the league averaging over five defensive actions per game and 1.3 key passes every 90 minutes. With Alonso having an eye on him, he could well be donning white next season. Real Madrid News Real Madrid have already closed the contract renewals of two first-team stars – Romano Published 2 minutes agoon September 5, 2025 Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images Real Madrid had an eventful summer transfer window during which there were multiple new arrivals and exits.

At the same time, the Merengues also managed to work on some strategic contract renewals which will hold them in good stead. Courtois, Brahim renewals done Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have already successfully secured the contract renewals of first-team stars Thibaut Courtois and Brahim Diaz.

Courtois, the undisputed starter in goal for Los Blancos, has a contract that expires in the summer of 2026, meaning he has entered the final year of his deal. However, Real Madrid have already moved to secure his renewal, with an agreement already reached between all parties and only the official signing and announcement remaining pending at this point.

It is understood that Courtois’ new deal will run until 2027, meaning a one-year extension keeping in line with the club’s policy for players over 30 years old. Renewal signed. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) As for Brahim, his contract with Los Blancos ran until 2027, but Real Madrid have offered him an extension after being pleased with his performances.

There were rumours of interest from clubs in England and Italy during the summer transfer window, but the Moroccan international never considered an exit and opted to extend his contract. Romano states that the former Manchester City ace has already signed his new contract at Real Madrid and only the official announcement is pending at this point – much like with the renewal of Ferland Mendy, which was already signed last year but is yet to be announced.

By doing so, Real Madrid have tied down the futures of two important members of the team to the club.
